Public hashtag channels are easy to join and useful for community-wide topics, local social chatter, experiments, and event coordination. If your app supports channel discovery or direct entry, add the channel name exactly as written, including the #.
Private channels are for smaller groups that do not want their traffic mixed into public mesh chat. Make a private channel for your family, team, event crew, neighborhood group, or mutual-aid pod, then share the channel details only with the people who should participate.
