What is all this mesh stuff?
A mesh is a group of small radio devices that can talk to each other and help pass messages along. Instead of everything needing the internet, a cell tower, or one central router, each radio can help the network stay connected. That means messages can keep moving across the area even when normal service is unavailable, overloaded, or simply not needed. Two of the most-used technologies for this are MeshCore and Meshtastic.
MeshCore is the system West Michigan Mesh uses to build that kind of local radio network. It works with small, inexpensive, low-power radios, and you do not need an amateur radio license to use it. MeshCore helps people stay connected across neighborhoods, events, and community spaces. The goal is to create a simple, community-supported communication network that people can use, learn from, and help grow.
What frequency settings should I use for MeshCore?
Use the following settings, which are default for USA/Canada.

Any specific changes I need for a repeater configuration?
A full config guide is on MichMesh.net, but the biggest thing we recommend is changing path.hash.mode. Michigan settled on path.hash.mode 1 as of May 20, 2026. Set this on all repeaters.
Companion nodes using path.hash.mode 0 remain compatible with the network, but repeater visibility in MeshCore apps requires path.hash.mode 1.
What should I buy for a repeater?
For the easiest out of the box solution, we recommend the Seeed Studio P1-Pro Solar Node. It is a small, easily mountable device that just works once you configure it and put it up!
What if I want a device to carry so I can talk to other people?
There are a lot of options, but we usually suggest the Wio Tracker L1 Pro.
If you want something smaller that can tuck into a pocket, the Seeed Tracker T-1000E is a good fit.
What do we need to know about how these are installed?
These nodes are designed to be self-sufficient and do not require a connection to building infrastructure, other than a secure physical mounting point.
Each device needs:
- A clear southern-facing exposure to the sky for the solar panel.
- A suitable place to attach the node securely.
Most installations use hose clamps to attach the node to a pipe, railing, or similar structure. If your site has a tower, mast, rooftop structure, or another mounting option, we can usually adapt the installation. Contact us and we’ll be happy to talk through the best setup for your location.
